Job Description: SMITH is seeking to hire a seasonal environmental scientist. Primary responsibilities include noxious weed management, prairie dog management, migratory bird nest surveys, burrowing owl surveys, raptor nest monitoring, GIS mapping, and writing technical reports. Other responsibilities may include erosion control, stormwater management, ecological restoration, wetland delineations and monitoring, and baseline site assessments. Work is 80-90% field-based. Crews meet at our Dacono office most mornings before mobilizing to the day's jobsite.
Qualifications:
General knowledge of Colorado's noxious weeds and possess or willing to obtain a Certified Operators or Qualified Supervisors license from the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Experience using Trimble GPS units and ArcGIS or similar units and software. Experience safely operating an ATV. Must have a bachelor's degree in natural resources management, wildlife biology, or related field. Ability to interpret topographic maps and aerial photographs. Willing to safely work around and with toxic chemicals (i.e., pesticides). Willing to humanely euthanize prairie dogs to donate to a raptor rehabilitation center. Knowledge of regional birds and field experience searching for migratory bird nests or experience conducting similar surveys. Experience delineating wetlands using the US Army Corps of Engineers manual (1987) and the Great Plains Regional Supplement (2010) is preferred. Knowledge of the Endangered Species Act and habitat requirements for local listed species is preferred. Must work well alone and as part of team. Some construction experience would be beneficial. Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record. Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check. This position generally extends through the fall with the possibility of transitioning into a full-time, benefitted position. Review of applications will begin immediately.
