Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Bioethics and Interdisciplinary Studies at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University carries out a four-fold mission of professional education, research, service, and clinical ethics consultations. The department teaches required courses in all four years of medical school, including courses on the ethical and social aspects of medicine in the first and second years, case-based ethics seminars with third-year students during their various clinical clerkship rotations, and electives in ethics, law, philosophy, history, literature, end-of-life issues, spirituality, leadership, social policy, and medical ethics and war for fourth-year students. In addition, the faculty teach in the Honors College, the PA program, and also offer a graduate research ethics course. The department contributes to the intellectual life of the university, the medical center, and the community through its its Readers' Theater Program and participation in a variety of continuing education programs. Faculty members also serve on school of medicine, university, and hospital committees, including those which address ethical issues.
Job Duties
The Department of Bioethics and Interdisciplinary Studies at the Brody School of Medicine announces an immediate opening for a fixed-term or tenure track Teaching Assistant Professor, Teaching Associate Professor, or Assistant or Associate Professor position.
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, teaching bioethics, research ethics, and/or applied areas of the humanities in the medical sciences to medical students, residents, graduate students, and learners and clinicians in other healthcare fields within the Brody School of Medicine and other health-related programs. Responsibilities also include other activities related to funded scholarship and providing clinical ethics services.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.
The Brody School of Medicine, located in Greenville, NC, is part of East Carolina University. The school has a tripartite mission: to increase the supply of primary care physicians to serve this state, to improve the health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina, and to enhance the access of minority and disadvantaged students to a medical education. A terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., J.D., D.H.C.E.) from an appropriately accredited institution in a relevant discipline is required. Exceptional applicants who have completed all-but-dissertation requirements for a terminal degree may be considered. Strong academic credentials and formal training in ethics are important.

A secondary clinical degree in additional to a terminal degree as stated above is preferred. HEC-C is not required but desirable.
