Duties Function as a technical specialist for the division demonstrating in-depth knowledge of an engineering process and/or of technical aspects of the industry or in a lead substation design role encompassing distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission level voltage classes. Perform quality auditing (QA) checking on one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams for relaying panels, SCADA/Communication drawings, panel front views, panel drilling details, section cuts, plan views, conduit plans, grounding plans, BOM's, cable lists, conduit lists. Perform QA of various engineering calculations, such as AC Station service sizing, DC Battery Sizing, conductor sizing, conduit fill, lighting studies and lightning protection studies following standard methods and principles. Lead complex projects, train less experienced engineers and technicians and coordinate with the client on a regular basis. Lead smaller production teams; and serve as the responsible charge for a project. Review lower-level engineering work or assignments. Oversee collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work. Review and approve manufacturer's prints for various substation equipment such as breakers, switches, transformers. Design a complete project of moderately complex scope of substation design projects and within an assigned practice area. With minimal supervision, apply advance engineering techniques and analyses for problems and methods. P repare a variety of complex engineering deliverables. Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Prepare complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles. Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects. Actively provide engineering support during procurement and construction. Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects. Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on less complex projects. Provide support to business development and pursuit activities. Assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required. E xpand knowledge and skill set in area of discipline. Expand knowledge in other disciplines and/or functional areas. Continue to learn, remain current and apply independent knowledge and interpretation about departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures relative to assigned tasks. Requirements Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field plus at least three years of related experience. In the alternative, the employer will accept a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field plus at least five years of related experience. PE Required. Related experience must include: high-voltage substation design (minimum of 34.5kV); creating and reviewing project schedules and budgets; performing quality analysis and quality control responsibilities; and designing and interpreting one lines, three lines, schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and physical substation drawings (including plan views, section cuts, conduit, cable schedule, and bill of materials). Must have experience working with substation indoor and outdoor design. Must have previous experience working with multinational teams. Must have experience working with civil and construction engineers, construction support, internal and external client co-ordination, and procurement of major electrical equipment. Must have experience with cost estimation and analyzed improvements in QA/QC of the design package. Must have experience with the following software: Microsoft Office and PDF writing software such as Bluebeam Revu, Adobe or related. Must have experience with applicable codes and standard for substation projects, including NESC, NEC, and IEEE. Up to 5% national travel is required. Telecommuting is permitted within a reasonable commuting distance from the Ann Arbor office. Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.
