Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 20 hours per week), seasonal (May-September) Cashier 1 position for the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

This position greets and orients visitors to the Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitors Center (HMSC VC), confirms online reservation(s) and receives money and makes change as needed in exchange for entrance to the VC and may receive donations to support the VC. The HMSC VC is in Newport, OR and is operated and managed by Oregon Sea Grant. The Hatfield Visitor Center attracts more than 150,000 visitors and upwards of 10,000 students annually to engage in lifelong learning and discovery about marine science and marine and coastal ecosystems. The 15,000 square foot facility is filled with family-friendly interactive exhibits, live animals and touch tanks, and state of the art technology, and is open 7 days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day.


This position will work two to three days a week and report to the Visitor Center Coordinator. The position requires a general knowledge of cash handling policies and procedures. Additional duties include professionally providing information about the Visitor Center, HMSC campus, Oregon Sea Grant program, and the local area to visitors; assisting volunteers with interpreting the exhibits within areas surrounding the Visitor Center entrance; answering visitors' questions, assisting with exhibit trouble shooting and maintenance when needed, and light housekeeping.

Key Responsibilities 75% Cashier Duties:
Confirms online (paid) reservations. Receives monies and assists with credit card purchases for ticket(s) to enter the Hatfield Visitor Center or make donations; makes accurate change. Working with Admin Asst or others to collect/count moneys from physical donation box, change machine and penny smasher as needed. Obtains previously counted cash from a cashbox/safe; counts and verifies beginning amount. Recording beginning till amounts on a cash count slip. End of day, gathers all monies and deposits the cash in the safe; enters visitor totals and cash collected on daily cash count slip. Enters total visitor count and cash/credit card total dollar amount for the day into the Ideal Logic software system.


20% Greeter duties:
Welcoming and orienting visitors to the VC; keeping the front desk area organized and up to date (flyers, brochures, signage and the like); interpreting exhibits near front desk, encouraging donations, answering visitor questions, checking in with volunteers, wishing visitors farewell and inviting return visits and donations, light housekeeping and exhibit troubleshooting/upkeep, updating signage, general office duties.


5% Other duties as assigned. What We Require Six months of cashiering experience exchanging money for purchases and making change; Training or experience should have included operating a calculator or ten-key adding machine by touch, and using a computer and keyboard; Some positions may require the capacity to be bonded.



What You Will Need Customer service experience, excellent communication skills, ability to adapt to a changing technological environment. Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.


What We Would Like You to Have One year of cashiering experience, exchanging money for purchases and making change.
Experience working with volunteers, general knowledge of coastal marine life, experience in outreach and engagement.
Proficiency or fluency in a second language.


Working Conditions / Work Schedule Work schedule to be determined. Schedule will be 20 hours per week between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM and will include weekend hours.
