What We're Seeking: DATCP's Division of Animal Health is recruiting for an Animal Health Inspector (Entry or Objective) to fill employment opportunities in the Bureau of Field Services. We will be filling this position at the Entry or Objective level depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. This is a field-based position and will be assigned a fleet vehicle for work-related travel. The selected applicant can select a headquarter in one of the following counties: Trempealeau, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Juneau, Adams, Vernon. Qualifying candidates are not required to live in a county headquarter location. However, reimbursement for commuting to or from the employee's assigned headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.). Routine travel within an assigned territory and throughout the state for assigned work and emergency response is required.

Where We Are Located: This position is comprised primarily of field work but will need to report physically to its respective Wisconsin office location when business needs require. DATCP is located in the Prairie Oaks State Office Building situated on Madison's southeast side. We are only minutes away from the Beltline Highway, Interstate 90 and Highway 51 for quick access to local restaurants, retail and service locations.

Position Summary These positions are responsible for the enforcement of animal health laws, regulations, and standards. For an assigned geographic area of the State, each position spends most of its time inspecting records, animal facilities and equipment for compliance with animal health laws, rules, and regulations. Through routine activities, the positions will educate owners, dealers, markets, etc. and seek voluntary compliance with animal health rules. These positions also investigate complaints or violations of animal health rules, and identify entities engaged in unlicensed activities. The positions will also issue and document verbal and written warnings as well as make recommendations for prosecution of animal health rule violations, issue quarantines, refer cases for further compliance actions, assist with disease investigation, testing, sampling, epidemiology, and trace animal movement. These positions will also be responsible for basic maintenance and transportation of equipment as needed.

Salary Information The entry level Animal Health Inspector - Entry is in schedule-range 05-13 and starting pay is $23.82 per hour (approximately $49,545 annually). The Animal Health Inspector - Objective is in schedule-range 05-14 and starting pay is $25.76 per hour (approximately $53,580 annually). This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job Details DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.
A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DATCP sponsorship) at the time of application.
Possession of a valid driver's license and the eligibility to drive a State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle* is required
In order to be authorized to drive a State vehicle the candidate must meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy, which are: Must have a valid driver's license; Must have a minimum of two years of licensed driving experience; Must be 18 years of age. Additionally, your driving record MUST NOT reflect any of the following conditions:
Three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two years; Operating While Intoxicated (OWI)/Driving Under the Influence (DUI) citation within the past 12 months; Suspension or revocation of driver's license. Routine travel of approximately 50%-80% of the time is required for conducting investigations, inspections, etc. During disease responses, overnight travel may be required while deployed.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Qualifications Minimally qualified candidates at Entry level will have: Experience using computer software, programs, and databases in an educational or professional setting, including but not limited to, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, Word, etc. Experience working independently at a worksite and/or in a remote field position. (i.e. coordinates workload assignments, self-scheduling, exhibit accountability, efficiently manage time) Experience with professional communications. Examples may include but not limited to: verbal conversations, letters of information, email correspondence, inspection reports, and ability to utilize virtual platforms, etc.
Highly qualified candidates at the Entry level will have one or more of the following: Experience working in quality assurance or inspection verifying compliance with established standards, specifications, or regulations. Training and/or experience with animal handling, agriculture and/or animal production practices And at least one of the following: Experience conducting investigations, collecting evidence and/or documenting findings to verify compliance with policies, rules, laws, etc. Experience issuing enforcement actions and/or notices, performing follow-up inspections, referring cases for further compliance action, etc. It is critically important your application materials clearly describe your experience related to the stated criteria.
