This position is part of theEconomic, Sustainability & Market Analysisteam. Primary responsibilities of team members include the development of conceptual process designs, and the economic and sustainability analyses of biomass-based conversion processes.

Job Duties
The selected candidate will work on the development of conceptual process models in Aspen Plus for the conversion of biomass to liquid transportation fuels and co-products and use those models to provide product cost estimates. The engineer will work with researchers of diverse backgrounds to understand the details of ongoing and future research and help model the potential commercial-scale impacts of research outcomes. Work products will include technical reports, journal articles and presentations. It is expected that the delivered work will be of superior quality, and will sometimes need to be delivered under aggressive timelines. Other aspects of the work will include, but will not be limited to literature reviews, study of the petroleum refinery infrastructure compatibility of products,analysis for novel technologies around CO2 capture/upgrading and plastics deconstruction/recycling,and the development of sustainability metrics for the conversion processes being studied.
Our ideal candidate will have experience with use and application of engineering principles, theories and concepts. To be considered, candidates must have strengths in modeling with tools such as Aspen Plus. Candidates showing evidence of being detail oriented, being self-motivated and learning independently, and having experience with advanced process modeling will be preferred. In addition, strong writing and presentation skills are necessary. The candidate should be able to work under pressure with tight deadlines when the situation demands and also be a team player with a diplomatic approach. It will be helpful to show evidence of working on projects where external information is assimilated into work products, being resourceful at finding that information, and being able to present the information in a professional and thoughtful manner.

Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $59,100 - $97,600
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
