Job Description

This is an OPS grant:funded technical position, located in St. Petersburg, which supports Fish and Wildlife Research Institute scientists within the Fishery Dependent Monitoring subsection. The applicant selected for this position should have an interest the management and analysis of recreational fishery data. The position will be responsible for querying data to respond to data requests, synthesizing data to be used internally or by partner and third party organizations, and conducting quality control checks of recreational fisheries survey data. The applicant selected for this position will be needed to communicate with both staff within the Fishery Dependent Monitoring subsection and other staff within the institute and agency.

The job duties are as follows:

:
Promptly respond to recreational fisheries data requests;
:

Collaborate with current staff to create applications to process data requests more efficiently;
:

Provide analytical support for state and regional stock assessments (e.g. length frequency distributions, indices, etc.)
:

Conduct regular quality control checks of recreational fisheries data collected by state surveys to ensure data accuracy.

Minimum Qualifications

:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and two years of experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or two years of experience as a Research Assistant : FWC or
:
A masters degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for one year of the required experience or
:
A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for the required experience.

Preference may be given to candidates with:

:

Background in fisheries monitoring;
:
Quantitative analytical skills;
:
Knowledge of SQL, SAS, and / or R;
:
Proficiency in one or more scripting languages;
:
Advanced training or coursework in a related discipline;
:
Background or education in computer science, or degree in wildlife or fisheries science or discipline closely related to the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Knowledge, Skill(s), and Abilities

:

Proficient with SAS or similar statistical software;
:
Experience synthesizing and summarizing data;
:
Experience querying data from relational database management systems, including SQL;
:
Experience writing transactional queries, stored procedures, and functions within a database management system;
:
Excellent verbal and communication skills including the ability to articulate technical information to colleagues and prepare technical documentation;
:
Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
