OPIOID FORENSIC EPIDEMIOLOGIST

POSITION DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

This position serves as an intermediate: level professional forensic epidemiologist, responsible for carrying out a broad and complex range of investigative, epidemiologic, and spatial analyses of demographic, supplemental and geographic data to evaluate opioid determinants and assess opioid overdose rates in Broward County. This position will assist the Medical Examiners office in obtaining high quality, comprehensive, and timely data on overdose mortality, and use those data to inform prevention and response efforts. The forensic epidemiologists primary role will be analyzing drug related death data and preparing their findings for reports to stakeholders.

This position will be located in the Medical Examiners office and jointly supervised by the Medical Examiner and the Opioid Program Manager.

Analyze and interpret drug:related death data to identify significant differences and trends in relationships among sources of information and any factors that could affect the results of research. Translate or explain what information means and how it can be used.

Make complex mathematical and statistical computations and tabulate, analyze and chart drug related deaths and other deaths using large amounts of data. Report results of statistical analyses, including information in the form of graphs, charts and tables.

Investigate specialized research projects, present outcomes, and give recommendations. Serve as lead forensic epidemiologist in all opioid initiatives. Work in collaboration with other state and local partners to utilize data to address issues of overdose fatalities and serves as a resource to other BCHD sections as needed.

Serve as lead for the opioid grant project and as a resource to the community and project partners to include the provision of technical assistance to Broward Countys 16 acute care hospital emergency departments and 4 freestanding emergency departments that will participate in the enhancements to ESSENCE surveillance.

Communication::Participate in teleconferences, EpiCom, and various meetings where regional and state information is shared. Will visit and consult with community health care providers giving information to the current reporting requirements for communicable disease.

As a member of the Florida Department of Health and part of the epidemiology team, this position will be required to be available on weekends and holidays in support of disaster relief and in support of an epidemiologic investigation. May be called upon to be a team leader on an Epi Strike Team.

Will be an information custodian for the communicable disease database as well as paper copies of reports submitted. Will be the key custodian to the epidemiology work area as well as individual
