Job Description:

The Louisiana State University Agricultural Center’s 4-H Youth Development Department and the LSU College of Agriculture – Animal Science seeks to fill an instructor track faculty position in 4-H Education/Awareness and Animal Science at the instructor level. This is a 12-month appointment and has primary responsibilities in Extension (80%) and College of Agriculture – Animal Science (20%).

This position will provide leadership in planning, implementing, evaluating, and reporting the impact of agriculture 4-H educational events and programs and assisting in classroom and/or lab classes within the Animal Science Department. Effectively communicate with 4-H Youth Development and Animal Science Faculty. Develop educational programs in cooperation with the State 4-H office to train and develop volunteer leaders, Extension agents, and youth for Agriculture Education/Awareness programs. Coordinate in-service training for Extension Personnel in Agriculture Awareness programs. Collaborate with Animal Science, 4-H and other faculty, regional personnel with 4-H responsibilities and Extension 4-H agents to develop curriculum for use by parish staff, 4-H members, volunteer leaders and other clientele. Develop and coordinate an educational program in show ethics and animal welfare for youth, parents, volunteer leaders and other clientele. Maintain cooperative relationships with organizations and individuals to develop support for the 4-H Agriculture Science programs in cooperation with the Louisiana 4-H foundation. Provide coordination and support for LSU AgCenter’s AgMagic Agriculture Awareness program. Coordinate efforts with the Department Head of Animal to determine if needed to serve as an instructor for either a class or lab each semester based on the animal science department teaching needs. Provide leadership for a program of activities that meets the needs of all eligible clientele regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion or veteran status. Execute other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the 4-H Youth Development Department Head or the Animal Science Department Head.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:Educational requirements are: (1) Ph.D. in animal sciences or closely related field, or (2) Ph.D. in a field of youth development and at least one degree in animal sciences. Individuals who possess a master's degree in animal sciences or closely related field or master’s degree in a field of youth development combined with a bachelor’s degree in animal science will be considered. Strongly desire knowledge or experience in the field of youth development, agriculture education, or must have a willingness to learn. Other desired requirements are experience with one or more areas of animal science and/or youth programming; demonstrated experience using organizational and logistical skills, with attention to detail, to lead, organize, implement, manage, market, and evaluate youth-focused educational programs related to agriculture, animal science; and demonstrated experience in teaching and positively interacting with youth and adults. A practical knowledge of animal production is strongly desired. The candidate must be highly motivated and able to be self-directed; be able to work both independently and collaboratively; have excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to engage and inspire a wide variety of audiences; and have a vision of and commitment to the development of youth through their involvement in 4-H Agriculture programs. Additionally, the candidate must have highly developed interpersonal skills, and affinity for networking and demonstrated high level of confidence and poise in front of others; a working knowledge of computer applications such as spreadsheets, databases and other computer programs; and practical experience with the use of social media and website as a teaching tool. Must be able to meet travel and work hour requirements for this position.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
