Responsibilities

An Infection Prevention Nurse is responsible for Infection Prevention, Quality Assurance and Process Improvement. Participates in University Extended Care (UEC) overall Infection Surveillance, Prevention and Control Program. Functional area(s) of responsibility include clinical epidemiology, infection prevention and control and education/consultation. Responsible for routinely and independently implementing Infection Prevention Nurse practice protocols and existing UEC policies and procedures, recognizing and initiating appropriate follow-up of high risk situations and events in a timely manner, and effectively communicating with UEC / University Hospital (UHS) employees and affiliates and federal/state/local public health agency staffs in achieving infection prevention and control goals. An Infection Prevention Nurse serves as team member for the effective organization and implementation of UEC Infection Surveillance, Prevention and Control Program, assists with National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), CMS and Department of Community Health (DPH) standards and serves as mentor for Infection Prevention Nurse staff. All responsibilities focus on improvement of infection outcomes by reduction of infection risks for patients, visitors and health care workers. Practice parameters are defined by the Medical Director, working in collaboration with the Infection Prevention Committee, Manager and the UHS -Director of Infection Prevention.
This position will also be responsible for the coordination of Quality Assurance and Process Improvement activities of UEC and will work in collaboration with UEC facility Administrators and Directors of Nursing to develop, implement and monitor such activities.
Demonstrates population-specific competencies (e.g. age-specific, cultural sensitivity, patient-centered communication) in performance of role.
Qualifications

Education:
Graduate from a program of professional nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. Evidence of advanced education or continuing education in Infection Prevention is required. Master Degree in Nursing (MSN), or related field preferred. Acceptable evidence includes Certification in Infection Control (C.I.C.) or successful completion of education in the following areas (i.e., C.I.C. eligible): Patient care practices, infectious diseases, microbiology, employee health, sterilization, disinfection, antisepsis, epidemiologic methods, descriptive and inferential statistics, management, consultation and the role of hospital departments, nursing homes, home health care and independent practices.

Licensure/Certification:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Georgia.
Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) highly recommended and preferred.

Experience:
Five (5) years of recent experience as a clinical nurse, at least two (2) in post-acute care/skilled nursing facility (SNF) setting strongly preferred. Four (4) years of experience as an Infection Prevention nurse required. Experience in a comparable infection surveillance, prevention and control program is preferred. Leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:
Knowledge of regulatory issues and acts related to the CMS, DPH, CDC, DCH, OSHA, Public Health and Infection Prevention
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to teach/coach Infection Prevention staff members in basic Infection Prevention skills/tasks
Respects and maintains confidentiality of information including that of patients, colleagues and University Healthcare System / UEC
Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
APIC advanced training or equivalent preferred – required within one (1) year of job title
Advanced computer skills preferred
Demonstrates excellent analytical and problem solving skills
Demonstrates sound judgment, initiative and leadership/team membership skills
Knowledge of legal/risk management implications
Physical Demands:
Visual ability to read documents, including medical records and computer terminals. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Auditory ability to hear staff, medical staff, patients and families via phone and in person. Manual dexterity to extract, input, and retrieve data. Physical ability to move about the organization and travel to meetings outside the organization. Cognitive ability to understand and analyze complex health care information and data.
