Under the direction of the Supervisor, Genetic Counseling Services, the Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling services to individuals and families according to established practices, policies and procedures within the context of the Genetic Counseling Program for Hoag Hospital and its affiliates (the Organization), working with individuals and families to help understand and adapt to genetic disorders including interpreting information, analyzing inheritance patterns and risks, providing education, obtaining informed consent, coordinating genetic testing and providing information on available options.

The Genetic Counselor displays and practices a work:style reflecting the mission, vision and values of the Organization. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures, including the use of specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive maintenance.

Job Specific Essential Functions:

:Performs comprehensive patient/family assessments: collects and evaluates medical and family histories; obtains and reviews medical records to confirm reported diagnoses; evaluates complex medical and genetic literature from varied sources and incorporates into clinical practice; performs psychosocial assessment during genetic consultation.
:Provides an appropriate explanation of relevant hereditary factors and addresses previously:held misconceptions about inheritance; estimates and explains the patients risk; facilitates referrals for other family members who seek information; explains the available testing options including risks, benefits and limitations of testing; provides cancer genetic counseling.
:Coordinates requests for laboratory services; analyzes test results and conveys interpretation of results to patients and physician; distinguishes complex laboratory results requiring action, seeking appropriate supervision; provides reassurance and support to the patient/family.
:Documents patient/family care: develops detailed consultation reports conveying complex genetic concepts to patients and referring physicians, recording all interactions.
:Meets regularly with Genetic Counselor team members to review cases.
:Conducts patient intake/scheduling, as needed.
:Participates in multidisciplinary case conferences, contributing family history and genetics information.
:Participates in data collection and entry into Hereditary Cancer Program database.
:Maintains knowledge of support and research resources for patients/families.
:Participates in identification of system improvements.
:Maintains current knowledge of trends and issues in cancer genetics.
:May participate in community education.
:May participate in internal marketing of the Hereditary Cancer Program to referral sources under supervision.
:May provide research ideas and participate in research endeavors coordinated by an experienced Genetic Counselor II/III.

Education, Training and Experience:

Required:

:Masters Degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited program.

Preferred:

:Cancer genetics experience

:Must be able to master detailed and complex information regarding benefits and coordination of care.

:Knowledge of cancer and how it impacts patient and family functioning.
:Proven ability to interface with all customer levels (physicians, organizational staff, insurance companies, patients and family members).
