Data Scientist, User Operations | OpenAI Data Science - New York City and San Francisco
About the Team OpenAI's User Operations team is building world-class automation and knowledge systems that will reduce friction for users, provide industry-leading support, and serve as a proving ground for OpenAI's next-generation technology.
About the Role As an early member of our User Operations Data Science team, you will help build a data-driven culture around hypothesis testing, insight generation, and strategy.
You should expect to work on a wide range of projects like defining north-star metrics, designing experiments, estimating incrementality, and creating predictive models.
You will partner with our automation engineering team and our data engineering team to develop the data infrastructure for these knowledge systems.
In this role, you will: Design and deploy predictive models to forecast support demand, proactively identify user friction, and drive data-informed decision-making.
Collaborate with engineering to refine autonomous agents, providing insights on training data, agent performance, and rapid iteration loops.
Provide key product insights for PMs and engineering teams, shaping priorities and guiding enterprise-grade user support strategies.
Mentor other data scientists, establishing standards for data quality, experimentation, and ethical AI use.
Manage cross-functional data science projects about revenue, marketing, pricing, usage, and other topics core to the business.
Establish a data-driven culture by driving the definition, tracking, and operationalizing of metrics.
Become an expert in OpenAI's data and systems with ability to self-serve all the underlying data for our business and derive insights from them by partnering with data engineering, finance and other business teams.
Develop and socialize dashboards, reports, and other ways of enabling the team and company to answer product data questions in a self-serve way.
Partner with other data scientists across the company to share knowledge and continually synthesize learnings across the organization.
You might thrive in this role if you have: At least 10+ years of experience in Data Science roles within dynamic, outcome-driven organizations.
Expertise in statistics and causal inference, applied in both experimentation and observational causal inference studies.
Proficiency in quantitative programming languages, such as Python and R.
Expertise in SQL, with extensive experience extracting large datasets and designing ETL workflows.
Experience using business intelligence tools, such as Mode, Tableau, and Looker.
Strategic and impact-driven mindset, capable of translating complex business problems into actionable frameworks.
Ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and cultivate strong partnerships.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders and collaborate across various functions to ensure business impact.
Ability to craft clear data stories using decks, memos, and dashboards to drive decision-making at every level.
