This recruitment will establish an eligible list to fill current and future vacancies.

The Department of Correction & Rehabilitation is recruiting for Correctional Officers . Employees in this class are responsible for learning on-the-job and in a formal classroom setting, the basic techniques, practices and methods of correctional officer work. They are assigned to single post "direct supervision" general inmate housing units and/or other selected multiple posts with more senior Correctional Officers to gain experience in direct supervision, control, and discipline of inmates. Work usually is performed under immediate supervision of a supervisory Correctional Officer or Field Training Officer who initially provides continuous evaluation of work in progress.

Employees receive substantial training and instruction in the applications of basic safety and security policies, procedures, and methods regarding interaction with and supervision of the inmate population; use of equipment, application of post instructions, and implementation of general standard operating procedures.

Duties will include:providing a safe, orderly and secure environment; maintaining sanitary and healthful conditions; supervising inmate movements to and from program areas; assisting in enforcing clearly defined institutional rules and procedures; supervising inmate visits; monitoring telephone calls made by inmates; reporting to supervisor or a higher ranking correctional officer those activities/situations that are unusual or irregular and those situations where guidance is needed in order to make appropriate response or take the appropriate action; sorting and distributing mail; and testifying in court as required.

Vacancies may be located at either the Montgomery County Detention Center (MCDC) in Rockville, Maryland; or the Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF) in Boyds, Maryland.

Prior to appointment, all applicants must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, an interview, psychological evaluation, medical examination and drug/alcohol screen. Prior to a promotional appointment within DOCR, the selected individual must answer the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) questions and submit to a criminal history to comply with the Prevention Planning on Hiring and Promotion Decisions (115.17, 115.117, 115.217, 115.317). This is a requirement to meet Federal law and audit standards.

Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications will be scheduled to participate in a written examination.

The written examination is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2020 at the following times:

10:30 am

12:30 pm

5:30 pm

Applicants will be invited to register for the written examination at the time of their choice with instructions sent via email following review of application. All examinations are given at Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF) in Boyds, Maryland. All candidates who qualify for and schedule their written examination will be sent a background packet which must be completed prior to the written examination appointment. Candidates should bring the completed background packet, along with a driver's license to their written examination.

No walk ins will be allowed. All candidates must register in advance for the written exam. Each exam period can have a maximum of 30 candidates and slots will be filled on a first come first served basis.

Note: The email address used for the job site registration will be used to notify applicants of testing and other changes in status during the employment process for this recruitment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the email address is accurate and up to date.

Applicants who pass the written examination will be scheduled for an Oral Board interview. Oral Boards will be conducted on Friday, May 8, 2020. Applicants who have passed the written examination will be contacted by the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation to schedule their interview.

This position is covered by Employees' Retirement System, Group EK. If the successful candidate(s) is an internal employee, retirement plan coverage will be determined at the time the job offer is made.

The individual selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee". Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency, liberal leave or inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience:One (1) year of post High School full-time work experience or its equivalent.

Education:Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

Equivalency:Successful completion of one (1) year or more of college (full-time student status) may be substituted for the one (1) year of post High School full-time work experience.

Excess work experience beyond the one (1) year requirement may not be substituted for the requirement of Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

License:Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

Citizenship and Age:Individuals appointed to this position must be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of appointment and be either a citizen of the United States or a resident alien.
