About the Position
The Chief Deputy Assessor, plans, organizes, and directs a program for the continual appraisal and assessment of real and personal property in the County of Sonoma and represents the Division before official bodies, community groups, and other stakeholder groups. While supervising three managers, the Chief Deputy is responsible for a staff of 66 in the units of ownership, customer service, real property appraisal, business property auditing, and mapping. This position performs the most complex appraisals, recommends policies and process improvements, and plans long:term programs.
The Chief Deputy Assessor controls and directs budget preparation, personnel matters, and the management and technical functions of the Division. This position stays abreast of proposed state and federal legislation, anticipates policy trends, and identifies strategies and develops plans to integrate new laws and regulations into existing procedures. Policy direction is provided by the elected Clerk:Recorder:Assessor:Registrar of Voters, with significant discretion left to the Chief Deputy Assessor to interpret and apply that direction to the Assessor Division.

An Advanced Appraiser certification issued by the California State Board of Equalization Significant experience and knowledge of the Assessors Office responsibilities, including real property appraisal, business property and audits, ownership valuation, mapping, value entry, exemptions, and customer service Significant experience with complex appraisals and appeals A commitment to excellent customer service Experience with short: and long:term strategic planning The ability to be adaptable and open to ongoing process improvement
